How can we try to make wise use of water?

Water is the central element and the origin of life and we are consuming it.

According to the European Water-Charta water is „precious for nature and an indispensable good for man.“
„Water is the central element and the origin of life.“, said once Georg Mayr, „Already Moses hit on the rocks, so that water could flow and life thrive.“

South Tyrol is lucky to be a region, in comparison to others not only Italian but also in the world, with a lot of water sources even if they are not regularly distributed on the whole land.
Water is the life-elixir: we could not live without it; that is why we should make use of water reserves wisely.
Unluckily, this advantage could disappear (in the future)
Since water has become a scarce resource, we have to create new investments and we have to do some rethinking on how we use water.
We should never forget that water is not a renewable source!
In Vinschgau we have the first signs of water shortage.
If one day this „gold“ disappears, we will have big problems also because without water agriculture is not possible and without agriculture people do not have anything to eat on their table.
How can a person survive without drinking and eating?

In the latest years we have made a big step forward: we have finally understood, that we have to react: a lot of new types of irrigation have been made in order to reduce water consumption.

South Tyrol, opposed to other countries, has enough drinking water and it is of good quality. Nearly whole Middle Europe has problems with high nitrate concentrated drinking water; in England or Berlin water is controlled by French companies and then „cleaned“. In South Tyrol we do not need this process, because our water comes „directly“ from springs.

The average annual need of water for industrial purposes is 80 millions m³, for the production of artificial snow 4.3 millions m³ of water is used. Water is used at the most to create energy.
The effective consumption of drinking water is low, because the most part of „the transparent gold“, after having been used, is cleaned and given back to rivers, lakes etc.

A proportional commission between the State and our region has crated a water-use-plan, which is aimed at the protection of rivers, lakes etc. This plan explains that drinking water is most important, then there is water used to for agriculture and finally for industrial use.
This document shows that South Tyrol is doing something to correct our previous mistakes.

If we want, we can contribute in saving water in a simple way, for example, by closing the tap while we are brushing our teeth or taking a shower. It is a little „action“, which can change something and so you can help building a better future not for all but especially for yourself!
