To smoke or not to smoke?

Příbor 31. 12. 2009

The question which has been discussed more often in the last years. Some people think there isn\'t a right or wrong answer to this question. Everybody can decide what the best solution is for him or herself.

Professor Janovec said: "Protect your health! We have only got one life and we don't get another one." Nevertheless, people don't seem to realize that fact. They have smoked since adolescence and they don't mind that they are destroying the most valuable treasure which all of us get only once. In all probability, they will die earlier than non-smokers because of lung cancer or clogged blood vessels. I think smoking is a bad habit from several points of view.

Firstly, smokers often behave selfishly to other people. Many times it has happened towards me. I certainly wouldn´t be the only person who could give the following example: there are a lot of people and when they come to a railway station the first thing that they do really astonishes not only me but other passengers. They pull out their cigarettes and a lighter and they don´t care that smoking is prohibited in public places. As for me I don't care that they have withdrawal symptoms from nicotine, and need a 'fix' or something like that. I don't want to be a passive smoker and they shouldn't do that.

Secondly, those people who smoke have mostly a smaller working productivity. A good example could be a collegue of my mother who was a heavy smoker. She often poppped out of the office to have a cigarette and it took her a lot of time to be back at work. The others did more work than her.

Thirdly , there's the price. People don't seem to realize it, but when somebody smokes one packet of cigarretes every day, he throws away about 60 crowns. That's 1,800 crowns a month. Then the family budget goes down and children, especially, have a lower standard of living. I know it because my father smokes.

Nevertheless, some people have a different point of view than me. They think, smoking is simply a habit and I accept their opinion. I for example eat chocolate on a regular basis. However, eating chocolate does not have the same negative impact on people around you.
Now you choose, which would you prefer? I know which one is more appetising to me.
